As this year draws to a close I am tying up the loose ends to an overwhelming amount of projects and obligations and preparing to move into a new workspace which will no doubt lend tons of new energy to RebeccaPeloquin.com, re-pel.tumblr and all the other venues where you can find things I make and love, so please as always stay excited for updates and new work!  Also starting at the beginning of January you will be able to find all sorts of new prints, originals, odd things and artsy alike in my brand new re-designed ETSY.

A movie review for you from me.

 

While this movie is far from scary it is a pretty cute B movie and at the time (ancient 1998?) was a fairly innovative and accurate reference for body modification, but miles away from torture.  Humorously it should be noted just about everything the “sadistic” character does is offered today as a paid service by most piercers and suspension troupes and can be seen easily in virtually any community alternative side show.  For about a hundred bucks you too can suspend like Robert Englund :)

When I first saw this film (as a budding 13 year old tragic baby goth) I had no idea some of these ritual performance piercings even existed but this film showcases play piercing, Okeepa (chest suspension) Coma suspension, lip suturing, eye suturing, Kavadi and some fucking terrible fake tribal tattoos while also mentioning the Modern Primitive movement (lead by Fakir Musafar).  Minus the tribal tattoos, Strangeland can almost qualify as educational, I say almost because no one can learn anything from shitty tribal tattoos.  It also reminds us of a simpler time, when industrial music was rampant and I would “probably” not mercilessly make fun of someone for tribal tattoos, just kidding.  I still would have, even while wearing black lipstick. (Yeah that happened sorry.)

Most of the acting is awful (I am looking at you every police officer in the movie) but Dee Snider did a solid job as Capt. Howdy (an obvious Exorcist reference) and I was sort of bummed to see his reformed cardigan wearing bad wig rocking ass get lead off by the Christians.  They should have noticed he was reformed because he buttoned his dress shirt up to the top button.  Duh, not evil.  Nice (wordy) cameo by a Robert LaSardo with hair who swoops in to save the day and explain septum piercings to the whitest detective ever. Good job buddy.

Rewatching this at “not age 13”, the bad writing, crap prosthetics, and scary CRT monitors are glaringly aparent but still do not make this the worst movie ever.  Watch it if you like hanging from hooks and have a sense of humor, or think Dee Snider looks kind of hot in a cardigan.

If anyone knows where the equivalent S&M club is in LA please message me post haste, with or without Dee Snider it looks like a blast, and every girl needs a good excuse to break out the eyeliner once in awhile.

I have been having a blast over the last couple weeks relearning the fun filled (and therapeutic?) adventures of LINO-CUTS!!! Now you might say, why Rebecca I wasn’t aware cutting out pieces of linoleum with little metal tools for long periods of time could be fun, well you SIR would be WRONG!  A half dozen episodes of whatever was on Adult Swim later and these svelte guys were born!

 

They are a conjoined African Antelope,  named  Percy & François Sinclaire and they will be printed in a very limited run on Arches (SUPER SEXY) Cream archival paper sized 9×12.  If you would like to own a Percy & François Sinclaire please send me a short message and I will hold one for you until the Etsy listing goes up.  Percy & François Sinclaire costs $40 or the equivalent of $40 in GOOD WHISKEY or French Macaroons (the Pink ones).
